Markus Berger (born 21 January 1985 in Salzburg) is an Austrian footballer who plays for Chornomorets Odesa in the Ukrainian Premier League, as a central defender.
Having started his professional career at SV Ried, Berger helped it promote to the Bundesliga in his first year, and played in 14 matches as the side finished in a best-ever runner-up position in 2006–07. Portuguese League side Académica de Coimbra paid €300,000 for his services in July 2007. After going almost unnoticed throughout the 2007–08 season, Berger scored in his fifth game with Académica, in a 3–0 away win against S.L. Benfica.
During January 2009, Berger went on a trial period with Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, for the club to assess his physical condition.[1] Berger's agent then claimed that a loan deal had been agreed between the clubs, with Hibs having the option to buy Berger at the end of the campaign for £500,000,[2] but the deal was not completed.
On 30 December 2011, Berger penned a three-year-contract at Ukrainian Premier League side FC Chornomorets Odessa.
